Ms. Hayes began her legal career as a corporate, utility and securities attorney (former Associate General Counsel for Colunbia Gas System) and after a short hiatus returned to the legal arena to specialize in helping the elderly.

MEDIATION EXPERIENCE:

In the area of mediation Ms Hayes has taken the following training:

  • Delaware Superior Court Mediation Training Oct. 5 - 7, 2009
  • Montgomery County Conflict Resolution Center Advanced Elder Mediation Training in the Transformative* Style Sept. 19-21, 2011
  • University of Delaware Basic Mediaiton Training in the Facilitative* Style April 9-10 and 16-17, 2013

        *Both Facilitative and Transformative styles of mediation are participant-oriented.

Ms. Hayes has been and continues to be a volunteer mediator in guardianship proceedings appointed by the Delaware Court of Chancery in cases were there are no funds available to pay a mediator and was the volunteer Executive Director, Secretary and primary mediator for Delaware Elder Mediation Services, Inc., a 501(c)(3) public charity, from 2011 until 2015. Ms. Hayes has also been a participating member of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Section of the Delaware Bar Association and in 2016 she co-presented a continuing legal education seminar before the Delaware State Bar Association on participant-oriented styles of mediation.

EXPERIENCE WITH ISSUES IMPACTING THE ELDERLY

Ms. Hayes has been an active member of the Elder Law Section of the Delaware Bar Association (Secretary 2009-2012, Vice Chair 2012-2013, Chair 2013-2014) and continues to be the webmaster and a contributor to the Legal Handbook for Older Delawreans (www.legalhandbookforolderdelawareans.com) and the chair of the Section's Mediation Committee. She also assists low income older adults in two ways:

  • As a volunteer for Delaware Volunteer Legal Services, Ms. Hayes prepares wills, durable personal powers of attorney, advance health care directives, Miller trusts and acts as counsel in guardianship proceedings for petitioners and as attorney ad litem for the proposed ward.
  • Also as a volunteer for the Delaware Medicare Assistance Bureau since 2009, Ms. Hayes volunteers two mornings per month at the Newark Senior Center helping seniors with Medicare issues. She has presented two continuing legal education seminars to the members of the bar related to Medicare.

Ms. Hayes was a Certified Guardian by the National Guardianship Association from 2010 to 2014 and continues to attend the quarterly meetings of the Delaware Guardianship Commission and to assist the Court of Chancery where possible including chairing a committee of attorneys that, at the request of the Court, recently prepared an update to the Handbook for Guardians
